Star Wars Stormtrooper Corps
If only the body of your post contains spoilers, you may instead make the title 'Canon Spoilers: Canon' and not use the link flair. I was on an earlier post arguing about their existence as a whole, which i know they are not canon anymore. It was argued that Stormtroopers were 'elite' as an equality of the U.S. Marine corps. But in all canon sources (inlcuding films/movies) stormtroopers are much more common to see and not once has any canon source mention imperial army troopers. My personal input on it is that im glad disney took out the concept of imperial army troopers and made stormtroopers as the standard infantry of the imperial army. In wookiepedia (where it mentions imperial army troopers) has not been updated and should be so.
It was pointless, i can understand if some have liked it, but i believe stormtroopers should be the standard infantry (U.S. Army for example) rather than 'elite'.
There are pleanty of stormtrooper variations that take the role of a Marine/shock trooper such as the shock troopers, death troopers, ect.So simply put, what are your thoughts/arguments about the issue at hand?. Keep in mind, Imperial Stormtroopers were historically based off on Nazi Stormtroopers/Waffen SS, who were selected through a rigid definition of 'elite'. Originally, they were selected on the basis of height (aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?), Aryan appearances (human race, in SW case), political loyalty, and physical aptitude. In that sense, they were more 'mass produced', programmed, and quantified (this goes against IRL modern special operations doctrines) to serve the Nazi Regime rather than how we view 'elite soldiers' today.Though they overlap, the WWII concept of military 'elite' is somewhat different from our modern definitions.
Today, there is heavier emphasis on high 'quality', light footprint, surgical strike capable troops with unique and diverse skillsets. These 'elite' soldiers are selected moreso on the basis of vigorous mental and physical performance rather than arbitrary traits like height or sociopolitical orientation. If anything, I'd say today's 'elite' troops resemble the Rebel Commandos moreso than the Imperial Stormtroopers.Another comparison with the Stormtroopers can be made with North Korea's communist army, which seems to have mass produced its 'elite' troops to the point where they can boast a number of 150k 'elite'/Spec Ops soldiers (a rather absurdly large number for their military infrastructure/size).
This is a very 1940s/50s doctrine. In that sense, these 'elite soldiers' seem quite standard but with a certain undefined notion of 'elite'.We can presume the stormtrooper corps works in a similar fashion to the SS and NK 50s era doctrine military.Otherwise, there are different divisions of stormtroopers, as well. I imagine the 501st is truly elite in comparison to the average stormtrooper stationed on Tatooine or posted as guards in the Death Star.
Case in point, look at the differences in skill when the 501st successfully overtakes the Tantive IV or Hoth Base. Meanwhile, the regular troopers cannot seem to hit their enemies that well.In other words, it's not exactly possible to compare a modern 21st century force to this WWII/1950s inspired doctrine. Imperial troops may well be the standard infantry, with a variety of quality differences depending on the unit. But they may also be defined as 'elite' within their sociopolitical cultural contexts and military doctrines.
Finally.I'll skim it when I get home-I work night shift. Here's the way I understand it, as is written. The Imperial Army garrisons outposts and operates vehicles, and the Stormtrooper Corps directly engages the enemy on foot- that is, they are the 'infantry' to the IA's 'mechanized' in the mechanized infantry that is the Imperial Ground Forces. We don't know that they don't appear in the movies-any that are in the movies don't have people point to them and say,' hey you, Imperial Army Trooper!' You mentioned walkers-we see in ROTJ that the personnel at the shield generator bunker on the Forest Moon, including the AT-ST operators, wear cloth uniforms and flak vests, as opposed to the plastics Phase III armour that Stormtroopers wear. Radically different uniforms.(This bit is all speculation on my part)We can also assume that, since the Imperial Armed Forces use some of the ranks and structures of real-world militaries(Captain, Admiral, General, Colonel, etc) then they operate in broadly similar ways. In the United States military, infantry and support units are, broadly speaking, segregated. You can't take an automatic gunner and throw him in an Abrams. It's reasonable to assume that the Galactic Empire's military would specialize its units in the same way.
Why put a Stormtrooper through extensive infantry training, and THEN also make him learn the complete ins and outs of operating, say, an AT-ST? That's an extreme waste of effort to go through for a faceless, ostensibly expendable goon. Then we have Lucas' own explanation for why only Stormtroopers get screen time: they just look cool. I disagree on certain points that you make. What i do agree though is that the imperial army being somewhat segragated from the stormtroopers, as they are just technicians/operators of vehicles. Also i just wana point out I appreciate the help, overall i sold the book since i was done with reading it, so i cant really go back to it lol, i havent debated with someone in a while haha. But As i understand it, the Stormtroopers in canon are part of the imperial army. The thing is the stormtroopers are always described as very inferior/badly equipped. The way i think of it at least is that the imperial army troopers are basically the army's national guard (defending/maintaining peace of worlds ruled by imperials/technical roles) while the stormtroopers would be standard infantry.
The definition of 'elite' has changed through canon. Rather than stormtroopers being an 'elite' infantry, they would be simply elite as in 'better than the opposing force'.How would you see the imperial military in terms of lets say the U.S. Military? For me this is how i see itNational guard = IATStormTroopers = Army infantry or Army rangers (as it is considered offically as part of the army)Imperial navy officers = U.S. Navy officerImperial Army officers = U.s. Army officer. Its very hard to try to implement it to real life as it seems that their roles are somewhat complex. For instance, the new upcoming game star wars battlefront 2, though it has not come out, gave a good idea of the imperial army's role. The StormTroopers recall the squad that gives them support on endor as 'special forces' (forgot their names, but you shouod check out the trailer if you havent done so).
An 'elite' army is not going to have an even more elite army, its just crazy and very disorganized. So I just got home a few minutes ago, and the first line I skimmed was'Belkor had not been idle. He’d filled several Imperial units with commanders whose first loyalty was not to Mors, or even to the Empire, but to him, and the soldiers would do exactly as their commanders told them. The stormtroopers were a problem, of course, but there weren’t very many members of the corps on Ryloth.'
This gives us three important bits of info right off the bat: There are a lot of 'troops' on Ryloth, most of them AREN'T Stormtroopers, and the Stormtroopers don't get along with the Colonel(probably because he's not Corps.)The subplot of the novel is the conflict between straightlaced Imperial Army Colonel Belkor Dray and the lazy, slave-owning local Moff Mors(who controls the stormtroopers.)In a previous section, the Twi'lek rebels are discussing the Empire possibly bringing in more stormtroopers, 'elite troops', to replace the 'conscripts and enlistees' of Belkor's forces.

Though they were separate from the more elite, army infantry fought alongside the notoriously zealous shock troops in order to bolster Imperial effectiveness during battle. The Imperial Army gradually upgraded and replaced the soldiers with stormtroopers as more planets fell under the control of the Galactic Empire, though army soldiers remained a core component of the galaxy-spanning.
