- Jun 20, 2017 So I noticed that as of this latest update (Third Rome) that nations will be less willing to accept an alliance with you because THEY have too many diplomatic relations. This makes playing Byzantium (and many other opms) virtually impossible. As Byzantium you NEED hefty allies Polan, Austria, Hungary, Mamluks, SOMEBODY, but too often they have too many diplomatic relations.

Once your army is built you should focus on building solely galleys, and in no time at all you will have more than the Ottomans, meaning you have naval superiority and can block that straight.You have lost empire rankYes, this is the biggest drawback to playing as Byzantium this way. Starting as a lowely duchy, you only have 2 diplomates, so this will make getting allies a bit of a pain, and the smaller Orthodox nations around you dont really want to be your vassals anymore (Such as Theodoro) do to the difference in government rank. The plus side is that you can get to kingdom rank at a reasonably quick pace after the Ottomans are gone.Bide your timeIn your years under Ottoman protection, you should focus on building your galley fleet, building your army and making friends with Poland, Hungary and Austria.

If you are lost at what to do, the new mission trees for people who have the Purple Phoenix pretty much hold your hand the whole way through, complete with great rewards and special events for sacking Venice and restoring the pentarchy.Focusing on getting the Greek lands back is always a good idea and a war against Venice should be easy enough as long as you have maintained your galley fleet.

Religious - Pick either this one or Administrative ideas as your first idea, it will start paying for itself once you start taking lands that aren't Orthodox, plus you get the holy war CB at the end which can be used on pretty much everyone that isnt you or the Russians. Administrative - Its worth ranking this up to at least the reduced core cost, as a lot of the territory you are going to take will cost a ton of admin points.
Defensive - Honestly I prefer this these days over quality and offensive. It gives you more money,%10 more morale and reduces attrition which is great considering you are going to be doing a lot of fighting in the desert. Trade - Every game I play I end up taking this, because after a certain point trade ends up making the most money. If you try hard enough Im sure you can make Constantinople the highest value trade node in the world.The 'Other' ProblemSoon enough Russia is going to come banging on your door.
